The Bleaching Society is pleased to announce a revolution in tooth whitening and the law. As of October 31 2012, new UK legislation declares that dental bleaching can only be carried out by dental professionals. In addition:
- Consumer tooth whitening products can contain up to 0.1 per cent hydrogen peroxide.
- Bleaching treatment using over six per cent hydrogen peroxide is banned.
- For bleaching products with between 0.1 per cent and six per cent hydrogen peroxide, a dentist must perform an examination and the first treatment. After this, the patient can continue treatment at home.
- Tooth-whitening products are banned for under 18-year-olds.
Linda Greenwall, chair of the BDBS, says, “The Bleaching Society welcomes the new legislation. We encourage all dentists to make sure that they are au fait with the new changes and how they will effect them. Bleaching society members will have this information on the website where they can download the advice sheets.”
