The British Fluoridation Society (BFS) is pleased to announce Professor Damien Walmsley is joining its executive committee.
Professor Walmsley has held several influential positions in both dentistry and with the University of Birmingham. As the scientific advisor of the British Dental Association, he has advised and commented on many public health issues related to dentistry and oral health.
As president of the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE), Professor Walmsley has created a global network of contacts promoting dental education. He has also enhanced the international standing of research and education within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, through his director of internationalisation role.
Professor Walmsley’s own research is sponsored by the department of UK Research and Innovation and is a recipient of EU funding. His research in Dental Ultrasonics is cited in several areas including periodontology, endodontics and oral surgery.
Outside dentistry, he is a successful amateur photographer and amongst his many accolades he recently won the coveted weather picture of the month organised by #Stormhour and the Royal Meteorological Society.
Welcoming Prof Walmsley, Dr Barry Cockcroft CBE and BFS chair, said: “This is an exciting time for Damien to be joining the BFS Executive Committee. I am delighted to welcome him to the team. He brings a wealth of expertise and his educational research on e-learning and mobile learning will be extremely helpful as we move forward with the Health Bill, and its potential to aid the introduction of much-needed water fluoridation schemes to tackle dental health inequalities in the UK.”
Describing his appointment to the BFS, Prof Walmsley said: “My combined experience of working within global networks together with my knowledge of the latest technologies in dentistry will enable the BFS to promote water fluoridation as an effective method of reducing dental decay in the UK.”
