Despite being born with dysplatic kidneys, a potentially life limiting condition, and needing a kidney transplant following chronic renal failure when nine years old, Jamie, a ceramist at Kerwick & Roger’s Dental Lab, Stoneleigh, Surrey, has already won bronze and silver at previous World Transplant Games. Now he is aiming for golds in the badminton men’s singles and doubles at this year’s games.
Jamie trains at Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club, where he is coached by Sam Phillips and Dave Hutchinson. He first represented GB at the 2011 World Transplant Games in Sweden, competing in the badminton singles, doubles and mixed doubles, where he gained a bronze medal in the men’s doubles.
In 2012, Jamie captured his first ever gold in the men’s doubles 18-29 year old category at the annual British Transplant Games. Following this, Jamie won silver in the men’s singles at the 2013 World Transplant Games in Durban, South Africa. Just four days later he competed in the British Transplant Games, in Sheffield, where he took gold and the trophy shield in the men’s Doubles. He repeated this feat at the 2014 British Transplant Games in Bolton.
In order to achieve all of this success a typical week for Jamie consists of working in the dental laboratory during the day and then four half hours of badminton training and an hour and a half of gym work at night, but Jamie wouldn’t have it any other way because as he says “life is too short to dwell on”, he just gets on and takes each day at a time - come rain or shine always with a smile on his face.
Jamie also performs magic shows and illusions as a stage magician. He performs at trade shows, corporate events and weddings. He has now been doing magic for over 16 years, since become a member of the Junior Magic Circle.
