Nasal dilator has teamed up with Survival-32 the UK dental distributor on the back of the new N.I.C.E guidelines allowing dentists to treat sleep/snoring issues. The N.I.C.E. guideline recommends that dentists play a key role in the assessment and treatment of patients with sleep-disordered breathing issues and the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in the UK.

As primary care practitioners who see patients’ upper airways every day, dentists are perfectly placed to discuss issues, and help the thousands of households that have a snorer as well as build their own business revenues.

The news comes on the back of a new Annual Global Sleep and Snoring Report from Mute that confirms snoring (and sleep deprivation because of it) is affecting us worldwide, disturbing sleep anywhere between 1.5 and 2.5 hours (29 per cent of Australia, 29 per cent US and 22 per cent UK).

Snoring is one of the most annoying things that a partner/spouse could ever do, according to 25 per cent of all survey respondents. Seventy-two per cent of adults who snore or live with a snorer are left so tired it has affected their day-to-day life. Forty per cent have snapped at someone the next day, with the same number turning to high-fat or sugary foods to keep them awake, and a quarter (20 per cent) admitted to napping at work.

The independent research by One Poll, shows how using Mute helps snorers; particularly those with night-time nasal congestion or nasal obstructions, get a better night’s sleep. In a user trial, 75 per cent of partners reported snoring was less/much less when the snorer used Mute.

Mute is at the forefront of research, exploring why people lose so much sleep and what they can do to try to solve their problem. The team has engaged Dr Ellie Cannon GP, author and broadcaster as a campaign ambassador, and it forms part of its consumer PR campaign for Mute that has already seen widespread coverage across mainstream newspapers and magazine, reaching hundreds of thousands of potential independent pharmacy shoppers.

Steve Smith, spokesperson for Mute Snoring says, “Mute offers an excellent opportunity for dental practices to help customers get a better night’s sleep while at the same time saving their embarrassment. The numbers of people affected by snoring are astounding: thousands of us are very embarrassed by our snoring and will try anything to stop it. While it may be amusing to some, it can have a huge impact on your life – whether you are the snorer, or a person living with a snorer. Relationships can really struggle if one person – or even both – snore. Reducing snoring by using the Mute nasal dilator can ultimately improve sleep, which in turn improves overall wellbeing - both mentally and physically.”

Mute sits comfortably inside the nostrils and gently widens (stents) the nasal passages to improve airflow during sleep throughout the night, without drying nasal sprays, which only work for a limited time.

Dental patients can get supplies from the dental practice or be directed to nearby pharmacies, and to fully-explain Mute’s benefits to their customers with fitting and user advice, there is a wide range of point-of-sale materials, including counter stands, posters, information leaflets and size guides.

Mute comes in three sizes: small, medium and large with an RRP of £16.99, with each box containing one month’s supply. All sizes adjust to fit nose shapes. Mute recommends that pharmacies recommend customers buy a trial pack (RRP £12.99) containing all three sizes to make correct size selection easier.
