‘Patient-centric dentistry – Engaging the whole dental team to gain patient trust’ is the topic covered in the first session. Colette Bridgman, chief dental officer for Wales, describes the skills needed for a truly patient centric approach. GfK (Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung), a renowned market research agency, will share valuable insights about successful approaches from your patients’ perspective. A special guest for this session is Brendan McGeever from Google’s EMEA Division, who will present the latest trends in online search related to oral care, enabling dental professionals to be well prepared for today’s well informed patient.
For a successful preventive approach, dental professionals need to consider their healthy patients and their needs. In a session titled ‘What do healthy patients need from us?’, Catherine Volgenant, a dentist and researcher from the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam, will explain how to recognise the healthy patient. Professor Phil Marsh from University of Leeds and Diane Cummins will then talk about maintaining a healthy biofilm.
The third session, ‘Going beyond plaque control for periodontal prevention’, will include a review of recent guidelines from the European Federation of Periodontology for the prevention of periodontal diseases by Professor Søren Jepsen from the University of Bonn, Germany. Professor Christoph Ramseier, University of Berne, will give an introduction to motivational interviewing, with special emphasis on patients with periodontitis.
The fourth session compares two approaches to managing caries and preventing cavities and suggests useful systems and technologies. Speakers include Professor Richard Watt, chair of dental public health at University College London, Professor Sophie Doméjean, professor in conservative dentistry and endodontics at Clermont-Ferrand, France, and Andreas Agouropoulos, associate lecturer at University of Athens.
The following session deals with ‘Dentine hypersensitivity and its impact on quality of life and patient satisfaction, including technologies to combat dentine hypersensitivity’. Featured speakers are Sophie Doméjean, (see above), and Professor Christian Gernhardt, Martin-Luther-University, Halle-Wittenberg, Germany.
Dr. Marco Mazevet, immediate past president of the 65,000-strong European Dental Students’ Association, will guide delegates throughout the day, introducing the topics and summarising the key messages.
Finally, the #ColgateTalks will conclude with a live roundtable discussion around the advantage of a preventative approach for both patients and the dental office.
