According to the Royal College of Surgeons the purpose of foundation training in dentistry is to enhance clinical and administrative competence and promote high standards through relevant postgraduate training to meet the needs of general dental practice.

Philips has introduced a series of initiatives to help those who are newly qualified take their first steps towards independent practice.

To fuel their thirst for knowledge foundation dentists are being offered free access to a professionals-only website, giving them access education and support in the form of CPD material, mentoring, tutorials, and other information to smooth their path into effective professionalism.   Dubbed The Support Programme –the tsp website also features webcasts, downloadable articles and an active Q & A section allowing FDs to pose questions to a series of dental experts.

Commenting on the launch Mhari Coxon, Philips’ Professional Marketing and Relations senior manager stated “We havecreated a platform to deliver information on our Philips Oral Health portfolio, mentoring and support for Young Dentists’ development as professionals; a chance to interact and share with their peers, and Continuing Professional Development in the form of webinars and articles. We will also provide small group opportunities to meet with some of the leading dental professionals in the UK to learn and share in a quality environment.”

From mid April 2014 FDs simply need to register on www.philips-tsp.co.ukwith their GDC number and they will also open a window to a wealth of additional opportunities including the chance to trial products from Philips’ oral healthcare range.

Site visitors will also be given advanced notice of a series of Zoom whitening workshops being presented by master of the art - Zaki Kanaan - current president of the British Association of Cosmetic Dentists. The series of master classes is a way of gaining first-hand knowledge of this technique-sensitive procedure in order to produce the most effective results.

The workshops are held in an intimate setting and run in real time to take young delegates through every step of the procedure.  In the run up to the first event Zaki Kanaan explained that: “Tooth whitening is often considered an easy entry level treatment which most dental professionals carry out with little or no training. It is however very technique sensitive. I am looking forward to sharing my whitening experiences, hints and tips with fellow dental professionals through lecture based learning, live demonstrations, as well as focused small group teaching and hands-on training.”

Zaki added “The decision to work with Philips has been an easy one...they are clearly the global leader and trusted brand when it comes to oral health and Zoom tooth whitening, but it is their team on the ground that also sets them apart, delivering superb customer service to all their customers.”

The series is  being hosted at A-Dec’s regional training centres in Egham (London), Nuneaton (Warwickshire) and Salford (Manchester) making it easy for FDs around the country to get to a workshop.  The cost for the workshop for Foundation Dentists is £99 (including VAT) per session.  For more information about dates and venues and to reserve a place on any of the courses please register on www.philips-tsp.co.uk or telephone 0800 0567 222.
