The Mouth Cancer 10KM Awareness Walk is taking place at 12:00 noon on Saturday, September 19th, 2015, in London’s Hyde Park and this year the charity is hoping over 1000 people will step out to spread the message about how important it is to detect mouth cancers early, spot the signs and know the symptoms.
People travel from all over the UK to support the walk as it is a fun day out for all the family. There will be a free mouth cancer screening on the day, medals and prizes available for top fundraisers.
The incidence of mouth cancer is alarmingly high in the UK making it one of the top ten commonly diagnosed cancers. It affects nearly 8,000 people every year and it is estimated that around 60,000 people will be diagnosed over the next decade. Mouth cancer has a worst ratio of deaths to cases compared to breast, prostate and cervical cancers combined and affects more men than women.
Founder of Mouth Cancer Foundation, Vinod Joshi says “Mouth cancer is on the increase around the world. We strongly urge everyone to join us in increasing awareness of this cancer. Early diagnosis is imperative in order to save lives. Head and neck cancers are vicious and debilitating when detected late. Patients who survive suffer many disabilities with speech, swallowing and appearance being affected. There is much that needs to be done to improve support for them and increase awareness to allow earlier detection that will save lives and reduce the extent of disabilities. The Mouth Cancer Foundation 10 KM Awareness Walk is a great way for mouth cancer patients, their families and friends, the public and health professionals to come together and stand up against the disease.”
