A look ahead to next year’s first major UK trade show.

The Dentistry Show 2014 will return to the NEC Birmingham February 28 – March 1. It is set to offer a combination of lectures, handson workshops and live demonstrations, alongside an extensive trade exhibition. The lecture programme will cater to all members of the dental team, with conference streams dedicated to each area of the profession and each offering hours of both verifiable and nonverifiable CPD.

The Aesthetic Dentist Conference is designed specifically to help dentists develop their clinical knowledge and enhance their skills, while also providing new ideas and advice in business and management areas. The 2014 conference will be delivered by an array of highly esteemed and internationally celebrated speakers. Among these will be Newton Fahl, widely renowned for his work in aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry. Having initially qualified in Brazil, Newton underwent further training in the USA, before returning to his home country to help found the Brazilian Society of Aesthetic Dentistry. He has since published many well-received articles and has accumulated much experience in teaching and lecturing within his area of expertise.

This will be the first time Newton has attended The Dentistry Show, but he is already a firm supporter of the varied learning opportunities available to delegates at the event. He comments: “The format of The Dentistry Show is absolutely superb for promoting the utmost level of continuing dental education. It congregates many different disciplines into an inter-disciplinary approach, which all general dental practitioners and registered specialists can benefit from.”

Headlining the Aesthetic Dentist Conference on Saturday, Newton’s lecture is entitled ‘Achieving

Excellence with Anterior Composites – From Why to How’, and will help delegates develop their knowledge and confidence in the area of anterior composites.

Newton explains: “Over the past 20 years, composite resins have spun from interim, monochromatic restorative materials, to being a primary option when longer-lasting conservative and aesthetic results are desired. Enhanced physical and optical properties, along with advancements in adhesive technology, now allow clinicians to confidently indicate composites and perform direct restorations that encompass all from the simplest to the most complex scenarios. Furthermore, state-of-the art composite systems provide the ability to mimic the natural dentition in a manner that defies detection.

“Many cases today are treated with porcelain veneers or crowns, when composites would indicate a wider range of benefits. Offering enhanced aesthetics through a less invasive procedure, I hope to help delegates realise that composites may present a better treatment option in selective cases. My session will help make sure they gain knowledge to further the skills necessary to complete cases accurately and consistently.

“In my presentation, I will share scientifically based, clinically oriented information on how to achieve the utmost artistic and biologically sound results with composites in the anterior segment. I will offer an array of practical tips and advice on how to ensure reliable results every time, using case studies to illustrate my explanation. My motto as a dental educator is to help fellow dentists learn something they can put to use right away.

“In addition to dentists, the lecture will also be appropriate for dental nurses, hygienists and laboratory technicians, as I will look at every aspect of the treatment. I hope to give delegates attending my session ideas on how to enhance their treatment planning and material and shade selection, and I will deliver a step-bystep slide and video presentation of class IV restorations, direct veneers, and diastema closure, in addition to other unorthodox clinical challenges. Delegates should leave with the wider knowledge and higher level of motivation needed to use composite resins in the anterior dentition, successfully.”

This year’s show will host four hands-on workshops on the trade floor, providing practical skill sessions in the areas of short-termorthodontics, endodontics and much more. The BSP PerioLounge will also return, offering an insight into the world of periodontology from some of the worldwide leading names in the field.
