The prize is the result of a partnership between the British Dental Association (BDA) in Northern Ireland, sponsors First Trust Bank and the dental faculty at Queen’s University, Belfast which aims to recognise the distinct abilities required to manage the care of patients with special needs, such as those with some form of physical, medical or sensory impairment.
Fourth-year students are encouraged to compete for the prize by submitting a poster presentation considering how challenges presented in the care of a patient with special needs may be managed effectively.
Seamus Killough, President of the BDA Northern Ireland Branch, said:
“This is a huge year for the BDA Northern Ireland Branch as it is our 90th anniversary and we are delighted to work in partnership with First Trust Bank and Queen’s University to offer this prize fund to dental students.
“The BDA is committed to professional learning, particularly in areas which require different capabilities, and this prize is an innovative way to enable that to happen.”
Gary McMurray of First Trust Bank said:
We have a long history of supporting our local students in both their education and career paths. This award is one of a number of new joint initiatives with the BDA and First Trust Bank and a wonderful way of recognising the efforts and achievements of these dentistry students.”
Sue Morison, Deputy Director, Centre for Dentistry at Queen’s University, said:
“We were delighted that the BDA had the creative idea of sponsoring a prize that encourages students to look at this area of special need in dentistry. It is a great opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and understanding in this important area and to present to an expert Panel. Working in partnership with First Trust Bank is also a very exciting opportunity for all concerned.”
Students wishing to compete for the prize should submit their presentation poster materials to c.christie@bda.org at BDA by Friday May 17, 2013.
The prize will be awarded at the BDA Northern Ireland Branch celebration dinner at Titanic Quarter on November 16, 2013.
