Private healthcare provider introduces allowance to improve access to regular treatment

06 August 2024

Private healthcare provider, Bupa, has launched a dental allowance for its consumer health insurance customers to help people to stay on top of their oral health with check-ups and treatment.

From August 2024, anyone starting a policy or renewing their current cover has access to a dental appointment at one of 400 Bupa Dental Care practices across the UK, every policy year. This can be used for a routine check-up, a new patient examination, or emergency appointment.

If further care is advised by the dentist, customers have a £300 allowance within their policy towards restorative treatment, such as crowns or fillings.

Bupa is the only UK health insurer to include dental care as standard on all consumer policies. Access to annual dental care is important, reaffirmed with recent data from the ‘Bupa Wellbeing Index’ that found, on average, adults across the UK haven’t been to the dentist for two years and one in six (18 per cent) haven’t been for over three years.

Neil Sikka, director of dentistry at Bupa Dental Care, said, “Dental check-ups are essential for maintaining oral health, which is a crucial part of our overall health. Helping families to see a dentist every year promotes good oral health habits and enables problems to be found earlier when they’re easier to treat.”

Bupa Dental Care have said that all those named on a consumer UK insurance policy will receive the allowance, meaning the whole family are able to benefit from fast access to dental services.

If a policy holder uses this dental appointment benefit or needs treatment, it will not affect their no claims discount or low claims bonus.

Richard Washington, interim general manager at Bupa UK Insurance, said, “Bupa has a unique ability to join up health insurance and healthcare provision, enabling us to support our customers’ health needs more holistically.

“This innovative connected care approach not only aims to enhance overall wellbeing but also creates a seamless experience for our customers. We’ve simplified the process for using the dental allowance, which means customers only need to tell the practice they have Bupa health insurance and provide their policy number, and we’ll handle the payment up to the allowance.”
