MBE awarded to retired dentist

Laura Milby, former NHS Lanarkshire’s clinical director, general dental services, has been awarded an MBE in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours in recognition of her services to dentistry.

Laura said, “To be awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours was quite a surprise and truly humbling.

“I’m really looking forward to attending St James’s Palace in London where I will be formally presented with my award.”

She graduated from Glasgow University in 1984 and took up two part-time posts, one based in Lanarkshire and another in Glasgow.

In 2003, Laura became involved in dental politics, initially as a member of the Lanarkshire Local Dental Committee (LDC) and then as vice chair in 2008 until 2011.

Laura was chair of the Scottish Conference of LDCs in 2012 and 2013 and sat on the Scottish Dental Practice Committee from 2009 until 2013.

She became a dental practice inspector in Lanarkshire in 2008, until she was appointed clinical director for general dental services (CD-GDS) in 2016, a role in which she continued until her retirement in 2020.

Laura added, “Being involved in the committees was in addition to my role as a general dental practitioner in Kilsyth - a very busy NHS four-surgery practice.  I reduced my hours in practice when I assumed the role of CD-GDS, sold my partnership in 2018 and retired from practice in March 2019.

“I’ve had a fantastic career and worked with some amazing colleagues, had some wonderful patients and made many excellent friends.”
