Introducing Fizz-Free February
The Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP(UK)) is encouraging dentists to support Fizz-Free February, a new campaign to encourage people to give up fizzy drinks for a month.
Initiated by the London Borough of Southwark in 2018, the campaign has since been picked up by other local authorities around the country and is being promoted by the national Sugar Smart campaign, and the Faculty would like dentists to play their part in promoting a cause so resonant with the profession.
Following the successful campaign for the Sugar Tax, and the call for Coca Cola to stop handing out free samples, Fizz Free February is the latest initiative which the Faculty has supported to raise awareness of the oral health risks of sugary drinks.
While health messaging often advocates a switch from full sugar fizzy drinks to artificially-sweetened drinks as the lesser of two evils, this new campaign is a good opportunity to talk about acids as well as sugar, and to challenge people to break the habit of regularly consuming sweet-tasting fizzy drinks.
Posters, and other resources which supportive practices may wish to use, are available on the Sugar Smart website.
