With just weeks to go before the start of the UK's largest combined Dental Conference and Exhibition, there is a great buzz starting to develop as it promises to be one of the most inspirational events of the year.
Delegates will hear from the health secretary Andrew Lansley, who will address the 2011 British Dental Conference and Exhibition at 11am on Thursday, May 19. His appearance will come at a pivotal time for dentistry as pilots intended to develop a new dental contract begin. Commissioning arrangements, too, will be in the spotlight, as discussions about the establishment of a new national commissioning board that would be responsible for dental care continue. Mr Lansley is expected to participate in a question and answer session following his address.
Afterwards the keynote speaker is paralympic gold medallist Tanni-Grey Thompson who will look at how to achieve success where others fail and how to reach the top of your profession.
The clinical conference programme features renowned UK and international speakers such as Raymond Bertolotti, clinical professor in biomaterials science, University of California, who has been credited with single-handedly changing the face of dentistry. He will address the conference in two sessions on the Friday morning with sessions entitled Think adhesion, not tooth reduction and Quest for the best universal bonding agent.
Other leading speakers include Ken Harris, a GDP in the north east and UK clinical director for California Centre for Advanced Dental Studies; David Bartlett, head of prosthodontics, King's College London Dental Institute; Paul Lambrechts, professor of restorative dentistry, Leuven University Dental School, Belgium; Richard Simonsen, founding Dean, College of Dental Medicine, Midwestern University, US.
With oral cancer very much in the spotlight, Suzanne Scott, lecturer in health psychology at King's College London Dental Institute has been announced as the speaker for the Friday session entitled Early detection of oral cancer: identifying risks and reducing delays. This session will be of interest to all members of the dental team.
Running alongside the conference is the much anticipated exhibition. All exhibition stands at this year's event have been sold demonstrating renewed confidence in the market with many companies taking significantly larger stands. Covering nearly 2,000 square metres, the exhibition will see all major dental suppliers present and the launch of several major new products.
The free DCP theatre will be offering the dental team verifiable CPD sessions throughout the whole of the three-day event. Prevention is the key theme running throughout the programme with sessions focussing on preventive dentistry and periodontal health, integrating prevention into daily practice, preventing complaints, preventing tooth wear, and preventing oral health problems, demonstrating that prevention really does touch on all areas of dentistry.
