The British Dental Association (BDA) has announced it has helped to secure a further extension to the grace period for dental foundation training applications to the National Performers List following mismanagement by contractor Capita.

NHS England has now confirmed a further short extension to the grace period until February 14, 2017, for those FD applications still outstanding.

The BDA will be holding talks with NHS England in the spring and will be seeking compensation for dentists who have either been left unable to work or meet their contractual targets due to dentist shortages.

Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, chair of general dental practice at the BDA, said, “We’ve helped to secure another extension. Its progress, but is only fixing a problem for foundation dentists that we should never have had. There are many other dentists still waiting in line and we will not rest while our members are left at risk or out of pocket.

“We will be seeking compensation on behalf of all the practitioners who has [sic] lost out as a result of this shambles. Dentists should not be expected to pay the price of failure by a government contractor.”
