GDC hiring for two senior legal roles

22 January 2025

The General Dental Council (GDC) has started recruitment to fill two important roles in its legal and governance team.

The executive director, legal and governance will lead the delivery of the GDC’s legal, information governance and governance services, and contribute to the strategic leadership and corporate management of the GDC.

The senior counsel and associate director, legal will provide strategic, risk-based and pragmatic legal advice to the executive leadership team and to council. They will also lead the GDC’s in-house legal advisory function.

Both are existing roles that have been filled on an interim basis for the past 10 months.

Tom Whiting, GDC chief executive, said, “These important appointments present an exciting opportunity to be part of our senior leadership team, delivering on the ambitions in our plan and strategy. Legal rigour and effective operations are important to building trust and clarity in regulation, and these roles are part of ensuring that we have a proportionate approach to regulation, focus on important areas of public safety, and maintain public confidence in the professions we regulate.

“I want to particularly thank Clare Paget, interim executive director, legal and governance, for stepping up to the executive leadership team and providing the benefit of her knowledge and experience. She has shown the professionalism and pragmatism required to guide the GDC’s work in a changing and challenging environment while always showing commitment to public protection. Clare will move on from the GDC to her new role in March 2025, and leaves our legal and governance function in a strong and sustainable place.”

The GDC has strongly encouraged applications from all suitably qualified individuals and welcomes applications from those with protected characteristics. The regulator has said it seeks to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly, with respect and without bias.

The application closing date for both roles is February 17, 2025.
