Tooth decay can directly affect children in a serious and long lasting way, creating social inhibitions and problems with eating.
Yet tooth decay can be avoided when children are very young, through education of both parents and children. This is what Dinosaur Douglas and the Beastly Bugs, writtenby children’s author Heather Maisner, sets out to do.
When Heather learnt that dental decay and infection was the most common cause of hospital admission in primary school children each year – and that 26,000 children aged five to nine needed emergency dental surgery last year – she decided a new, family approach was needed.
Joining forces with Kate Barnard, consultant in paediatric dentistry at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, she created a fun, rhyming story about a naughty dinosaur, which highlighted the importance of looking after children’s teeth, while also helping to develop good bedtime routines: reading with children and brushing teeth before bed.
Written in rhyme and illustrated by Alex Godwin, Dinosaur Douglas Books explore subjects ranging from oral health to obesity and healthy eating.
Heather Maisner has written over 35 children’s books, fiction and non-fiction, which have been translated and sold around the world.
