May Firoozmand will attempt the incredible feat of endurance on a Concept 2 rowing machine – aiming to complete the challenge in less than 10 hours.
A solo row covering this distance is rarely attempted, but May, who’s studying dentistry in Varna, Bulgaria, has been training hard and is ready to take on the 100km mission. She hoped to raise over £1000 with her efforts.
She said, “My dental studies in Varna are gradually coming to an end, and I thought what better way to mark the end of this chapter and celebrate a new one than by organising a charity fundraiser.”
May explained that Dentaid delivers dental care for the homeless, survivors of abuse and other communities.
She added, “They are the epitome of a charity whose focus is to deliver free dental care and support to everyone - no matter their circumstances. Dentaid is a charity I am looking forward to working closely with in the future!”
May will be tackling the challenge at Oundle Sports Centre on June 5, 2024, cheered on by family and friends.
Reflecting on why she chose to study dentistry, May said, “My dear father, an accomplished dentist himself who passed away during my first year of dental school, inspired me to pursue a career in dentistry. I was raised with the belief that whatever profession I follow should be based on the underlying principle that work should be done in the spirit of service to humanity and that, as individuals, we can play our part in this world.”
After finishing her training, May plans to start working in the UK and continue volunteering with Dentaid. She added, “Studying dentistry abroad has not only helped me to develop a number of skills, it has taught me much about life, from adapting to a new culture to learning a new language, and the list can go on.”
