The British Dental Association (BDA) has welcomed confirmation from COPDEND that every eligible UK graduate has secured a dental foundation training (DFT) place.

In 2012 there were around 35 people without a DFT place, rising to 38 last year.

The BDA has said the announcement is “great news for young dentists and the future of oral health” but called on the Department of Health (DH) to ensure that sufficient places are provided so that this nerve-wrecking wait is not suffered by any future years of dental graduates.

Earlier this year, chair of the BDA’s Education, Ethics and the Dental Team working group, Judith Husband wrote to the Department of Health highlighting the significant number of individuals still unplaced and reiterating both the loss to the public purse and personal consequences for young practitioners if places are not found.

Previous BDA campaigning on this issue included an e-petition calling on the UK Government to ensure that every UK dental graduate is guaranteed a training place.

Following the announcement, Judith Husband, said: “We are thrilled that every UK dental graduate has secured a training place. This is fantastic news for young dentists and bodes well for the future of oral health in Britain.

“We’ve lobbied hard to ensure no graduate would be left without a place, but we will not rest on our laurels. Now we need to ensure that future dental graduates aren’t left facing another nerve-wracking wait. And with a new round of recruitment just around the corner 2014 must not go down in dental history as a ‘one-off’.”
