Announcing new chair

William ("Bill") Moyes has been appointed as chair of the General Dental Council (GDC), following approval by the Privy Council.

Bill Moyes is the first appointed Chair of the GDC.  He will take up office on October  1, 2013 and will lead a newly constituted Council, reduced in size from 24 to 12.

Mr Moyes currently holds non-executive directorships with the Office of Fair Trading, the Priory Hospital Group, and the Legal Services Board. He is a trustee of the Catholic Trust of England and Wales and chairman of the Board of Governors of Heythrop College, a constituent college of the University of London.

He was previously executive chairman of monitor, the independent regulator of NHS Foundation Trusts from 2004-2010 and Director General of the British Retail Consortium from 2000–2003.

Kevin O’Brien, the GDC’s current chair, said:

"I welcome the appointment of Bill Moyes whose wide experience, including that of  healthcare regulation will be of great benefit to the GDC in meeting the challenges and  changes ahead and continuing with our improvement programme."

Bill Moyes said:

Over the next two months Mr Moyes will be involved in the selection of the GDC’s eleven other Council members. Those appointed will be announced in July 2013 and the new Council will start its term of office on October 1, 2013.
