On April 24, Align Technology held their first Aesthetics Event as part of their educational programme supporting the aesthetic and restorative dentists who provide the Invisalign solution.

Jamie Morley opened the event and discussed the vision behind Invisalign that has recently led to a milestone three million patients treated. By focusing on a small product range those products receive complete focus and the attention needed to grow and evolve swiftly in line with new innovation and research. With the intention of improving the journey to the optimum smile Invisalign focuses on five areas of development: market expansion, innovation, customer experience, educational programmes and provider support.

Specialist orthodontist Raman Aulakh spoke on the subject of integrating Invisalign with aesthetic dentistry. He made an interesting distinction between aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry; he describes cosmetic dentistry as attempting to enhance or improve on nature whilst the practise of aesthetic dentistry is focused on the creation of the optimal natural appearance and the improvement of function. The difference between aesthetic and cosmetic treatment is often treated as purely semantic, however, Raman provided a fresh perspective on a controversial subject.

For Raman the key to success as an Invisalign provider is to offer a bespoke service and he emphasised the importance of thinking holistically and working in a multi-disciplinary capacity. He explained the science behind the elements of the picture-perfect smile and provided an in-depth case study detailing one of his own cases from the initial consultation through to the treatment results. Having once taken the delegates through the process step by step Raman then challenged them to use his method in a hands-on treatment planning exercise. The practical exercise was well-received and allowed delegates to discuss their different opinions and approaches with their peers and the experts.

Barry Buckley, a principle dentist, explained the benefits that Invisalign can have on a practice and how to achieve great results with ClinCheck software. Aesthetic dentistry has changed the status quo between patients and providers; a different type of relationship has emerged that sees patients pursuing treatment rather than dentists pursuing patients. For Barry, Invisalign is a means to raise the profile of a practice, aid the professional development of a dentist and ultimately create a new and lucrative revenue stream. In addition, he believes it to be a comprehensive procedure that is well-developed and is supported by excellent software. Barry describes the ClinCheck software simply as fast, accurate, multi-functional and useful for obtaining both patient understanding and consent. He walked delegates through examples of how to complete diagnostics and treatment plans in an interactive session.

For the afternoon, delegates attended detailed workshops led by Beena Harkison, Clinical Support Manager at Align Technology, and Brian Asselin, founder of Invisible-TX treatment Planning and Advisory Service for Invisalign, both of whom detailed the extensive support network available for providers. Beena held a discussion and Q&A session regarding the new facets of the ClinCheck pro software that was launched earlier this year. Brian Asselin demonstrated his recommendations for case examples brought along by delegates and detailed the advisory service his company provides alongside Invisalign.

The Aesthetics Event was indicative of Invisalign’s dedication to nurturing development and its commitment to supporting clinical excellence through education and an open dialogue.
