As children prepare to tuck into a bucket load of sweets this Halloween, an Oxford dentist and his team are opening up their surgery to the community to raise money for international dental charity Dentaid.

Amit Mohindra, who owns the Diamond House practice in Summertown, is offering children aged five to 12, advice on dental hygiene, good brushing and how to be aware of their sugar consumption.

The Oral Health Education Day will take place on October 31 and aims to be fun as well as informative.

"I previously worked in a hospital where young children were often having all their teeth removed due to decay," said Amit. "And in our practice we see numerous children who need fillings and extractions that are completely preventable.  As a nation we need to do lots more in the fields of prevention and education from a young age. We know that kids will want to go trick or treating this Halloween and we don't want to stop them - but some knowledge can help prevent dental problems in the future."

Amit, who has also taken part in dental volunteering trips overseas, is freely inviting all families to the Oral Health Education Day but is asking for a suggested donation of £10 per child which will go to Dentaid.

The charity works around the world, sending out teams of volunteer dentistry professionals and equipment to countries where people are suffering due to a lack of dental provision. A £10 donation provides dental care for 10 children in Africa.

The day is open to all families but places must be booked in advance by calling Diamond House Dental Practice on 01865 559 521. To find out more about Dentaid visit www.dentaid.org
